What is Acupuncture?

The theory and practice of acupuncture originated in China over two thousand years ago as a method to promote health and help people heal from disease. It is one component of the larger medical system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points to stimulate the body to heal itself through a combination of energetic and physiological means. Acupuncture has withstood the test of time as a medical intervention because of its remarkable effectiveness.

What is treatment like?

Most people tolerate acupuncture treatments very well and find the experience quite relaxing. The treatment itself involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body. There may be mild discomfort with the insertion of certain needles, but any uncomfortable sensations will usually disappear in less than a minute and often, there is no discomfort at all. Sensations such as heaviness, warmth or mild tingling around the needle are all a normal part of treatment and generally signal that we are properly stimulating the acupuncture point. After the needles are in, you will be left to relax on the treatment table for approximately 20 minutes. Most people wish it was longer!
